Industrial involvement with Taught Courses

Many aspects of the teaching within the Department are informed by industrial developments. We receive advice and feedback from industry on our teaching provision via the Department's Industrial Liaison Committee.

To address the demand for graduates with industrial experience the department has recently introduced a number of new degree programmes

G701 Artificial Intelligence with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G502 Computer Information Systems with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G403 Computer Science with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G402 Computing with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G491 Electronic Commerce Computing with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G503 Internet Computing with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
G611 Software Development with a Year in Industry BSc (Hons)
These are four year programmes with years one, two and four in the Department of Computer Science and year three in industry. During the years within the University, students learn about many aspects of contemporary computing, equipping the student with a relevant technical skill base. In year three the placement will be in an Industrial/Commercial environment relevant to the Software/IT emphasis of the programme. This provides students with an opportunity to use and develop the technical skills they have learned in a practical commercial setting. Employers value the skills and experiences developed during placement years and work based learning projects commenting that "Business awareness and maturity are significantly improved by work based learning", and "Students who have undertaken relevant work experience have a host of examples to share at interview".

The University Careers & Employability Service provides information, support and advice for students at all stages through their University career. They provide a range of services including advice on CVs, applications and interviews, and career options to organising career fairs and presentations from employers. Careers advisers work closely with the Department of Computer Science to provide career information to students with computing degrees. Our graduates have found employment in a variety of companies and organisations.
